Bridge over I-95 at Dunn closed after being struck by vehicle

Posted

A bridge over Interstate 95 in Dunn has been closed after it was damaged by an overheight vehicle, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.

An unidentified vehicle struck the Pope Road bridge at Exit 72 and damaged its steel girders, according to a DOT news release.

DOT closed the bridge so that it can be inspected to determine what repairs are needed, the release said.

The detour is the next exit north at U.S. 421, which is Exit 73.

The Pope Road bridge has a low clearance of 14 feet, 6 inches. It has been struck by vehicles several times in the past — most recently in May. The bridge is scheduled to be replaced with a taller structure as part of the ongoing I-95 widening project, the release said.
