Aragues wins Libertarian primary for N.C. House Dist. 44

Posted

Christina Aragues won the Libertarian primary race for Dist. 44 in the N.C. House of Representatives in Tuesday’s election, according to uncertified election results.

Aragues won 21 votes (55.26%) while her competitor, Angel Yaklin, received 17 votes (44.74%). The candidates were competing for the seat currently held by Rep. Charles Smith, a Democrat from Fayetteville.

“I'm not usually speechless,” Aragues said, upon hearing the results first from CityView.

“I feel good,” she continued. “It's nice. Angel is a friend, and [if] either one of us ... came ahead, it would have been a bonus. It'll be good to continue to spread the Libertarian message of freedom to Fayetteville and to District 44.”

In the Nov. 5 general election, Aragues will face off against incumbent Smith and Republican candidate Freddie de la Cruz, who previously ran in the 2023 Fayetteville mayoral election and lost to Mayor Mitch Colvin.

Yaklin did not immediately respond to CityView's request for comment Tuesday evening.

Aragues lives in Fayetteville and works in finance. She is a major in the Army Reserves and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Aragues told CityView her main campaign issues are safety, education and inflation. She said she is a supporter of North Carolina legalizing gambling of any kind, including sports betting. Aragues does not support any further changes to the state’s current abortion laws and is in favor of legalizing marijuana.

These election results are preliminary and could change pending the outcome of the March 25 canvas.
